Q & A with Author Michele McAvoy
My Superhero Grandpa was inspired by my father who passed away when I was 26- before my children were born. When my son was about 3 years old, I tried telling him about his grandpa and attempted to explain the concept of heaven and angels. Needless-to-say, it was a bit of a disaster. As I struggled to hold my son’s attention, I explained that angels are like superheroes. And then I went for it- I told him that his grandpa was a superhero. Success! My dad was now the coolest grandpa around. And that was how My Superhero Grandpa was born!
My father passed away tragically and writing My Superhero Grandpa was a way of channeling my loss into something positive and a way to celebrate him. Hopefully the book can help children like it helped me, to provide an avenue for them to express their feelings.
This book is simply told but has a very important message for children that have lost a loved one- celebrate those you love no matter where they are. I would like My Superhero Grandpa to ease the pain of loss for children (even if just for a moment) and to help children to remember and celebrate their grandparent. I would also like this story to help parents (like myself) to acquaint young children with a grandparent that had passed before they were born.
It’s obvious that this book is a labor of love. I want this story to warm the hearts of as many young children as possible and to also warm the hearts of parents who are desperate to introduce a deceased grandparent but just don’t know how to do so without getting into difficult concepts like death and Heaven with a toddler.
I actually have a good handful of children’s stories already written and itching to come to life! Not all of my stories address a loss of some kind but they all aim to assist children to understand and accept their emotions and to give them confidence. My next children’s book will focus on a little girl’s self-esteem particularly in today’s attention driven (social media) society. My next book, like My Superhero Grandpa, will have uplifting and whimsical illustrations and a simple message- love yourself.
